Situated in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northern Glory Tattoo Studio boasts a collective of talented and diverse artists. From detailed black and grey work, to more brightly coloured pieces, Northern Glory offers something for every north east local.
We sat down with the Northern Glory team to have a chat about their story.
A brief history...
We opened Northern Glory back in 2011. We quickly outgrew our first studio and moved after 3 year to a bigger premises. We recruited artists with particular styles, so we covered all styles of tattooing. Over the years, we have been lucky to work with some of the best artists in the north east!
When I was younger it was quite hard to be in to tattoos, as it wasn’t as easily accessible. I started getting tattooed really young and started hanging around tattoo shops at 17, 18. We used to get all the American tattoo magazines every month and copy all the tattoos out of them!
My older brother and cousin had a load of tattoos, and I just thought it was class! So I started drawing tattoos that I could get when I was old enough. I would draw tattoos with pen all over my hands and arms when I was still at school!
What are some of your favourite highlights since opening up shop?
Working conventions as a studio is always a great feeling. It's great to see everyone repping your company and just having a good time!
What challenges have you experienced since opening, and how have you overcome them?
The industry has changed a lot over the last 20 years! Everything is always evolving and changing, you need to just try and keep up with it. The challenge is making sure your style and tattoos are still relevant and appealing to the next generation. Just got to move with the times.
What does a day-in-the-life look like at Northern Glory Studios?
At Northern Glory, no day is the same. We have created a great atmosphere where everyone can just have a laugh. A normal day consists of some crazy conversations, good tunes and loads of tattooing!
Favourite tattoo-style and why:
My favourite styles are Japanese and Traditional. They look great and are always going to be a timeless style.
What sets Northern Glory apart from other tattoo shops?
I think what sets Northern Glory aside is the atmosphere - it’s like working a convention every day! Everyone gets involved in the chat and each other’s tattoos.
What advice would you give to those wanting to open their own studio?
Tips for people wanting to get into the industry: be passionate about the industry. Research tattoos, styles, shops. With social media, it’s so accessible to be into tattoos. And just draw all the time, work on your style and your portfolio!
Tattoos have become much more mainstream, widespread and accessible. What’s your opinion on that?
I think it’s a good thing, the way the industry has moved. It's the busiest the industry has been, so I think it’s great! Good tattooing will always prevail. Just make sure you are doing your thing, and the rest will come.
